PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A man attempting to rescue a woman drowning in the Intracoastal drowned himself. His body was found on Thanksgiving Day. The West Palm Beach police department issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com.

“The body of a man believed to be a good Samaritan who tried to rescue a woman from the Intracoastal Waterway Wednesday night was recovered Thursday afternoon. Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, West Palm Beach police were called to Currie Park, in the 2400 block of North Flagler Drive after a woman reportedly jumped into the Intracoastal Waterway.

A good Samaritan tried to rescue her but went missing. The woman made it out of the water, but the would-be rescuer, a man believed to be between 50-60 years old, did not. An extensive search immediately begun with West Palm Beach police and fire department divers, and crews from the U. S. Coast Guard. A Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office helicopter also assisted in the search that lasted well after midnight, with no luck.

At 1:06 p.m. Thursday, a 911 caller reported seeing a body in the water near the 2800 block of North Flagler Drive. Detectives and Crime Scene Unit investigators responded to the scene. The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office also responded. It is believed that the body of the still-unidentified man is that of the good Samaritan, pending positive identification. The woman who initially jumped into the water was taken to the hospital Wednesday night for psychological evaluation.”
