The man, Richard Leventhal, allegedly told the league that he could obtain football helmets at cost due to a relationship with a sporting goods executive. But instead, police say he pocketed the cash.

From the police report obtained by BocaNewsNow.com: “(The alleged victim) said that Leventhal approached him and saying that he had a friend who was the son of the CEO of Modell’s Sporting Goods in New York and could buy the helmets “at cost” which he stated was either $68.00 or $69.00 per helmet. (The victim) said that Leventhal’s proposal was accepted and reimbursed him accordingly as he presented receipts of payment for the helmets said that he would write Leventhal a check out of the league’s PNC operating account as reimbursement. said that he got a call from PNC saying that one of the reimbursement checks was attempted to be cashed twice and they were concerned about fraud. He said at that time he began to become suspicious of the deal with Leventhal and the helmets. (The victim) said that he did a financial audit of the finances and realized that the league had paid for 415 helmets when they only needed 300. He said at that point he had a conversation with about this but still didn’t believe that Leventhal would steal from the league. (The victim) said that he then sent out an email requesting a conference call with David Ouziel and the rest of the league board of directors at which point he and (the victim) got a text message from Leventhal asking “Do you have time to talk?” said that he and spoke with Leventhal over the phone at which point he admitted that there were no helmets and that he used the league’s money for personal use. said that Leventhal told him that David Ouziel does exist and that he is a friend of his however there was never any deal in place for the purchase of helmets.

(The victim) said that Leventhal said he needed the money because he was taking care of his sister who was ill. (The victim) said that Leventhal told him and that no helmets were ever ordered. (The victim) said that there were text messages exchanged between he and and a message from Leventhal to him in regards to this allegation. provided me with a copy of a text message he stated he received from Leventhal. The text read I know your mad but hope you still read this text. I wish you would’ve tried to setup a payment plan to rectify this without getting the insurance company involved. Huge mistakes were made on my part and although I was very desperate with no where to turn I never should’ve done what I did. As someone that knows firsthand this will destroy everything that I have left to try to salvage some sort of normalcy for my kids. I’m sorry for deceiving you and the entire league. I know that I ruined your faith in me and our friendship but I plead to you to show some leniency and try to resolve this another way. I never meant to hurt you or the friendship we had I’m sorry!!!”

Leventhal, who lists 177 Dorset E in Century Village as his home address, was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on two counts of fraud — including scheme to defraud and money laundering. He was later released on his own recognizance. A court date is pending.
