BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The latest version of an old scam is leading to a warning from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
PBSO tells BocaNewsNow.com that someone posing as a PBSO Lieutenant, using the name of a legitimate Lt. by the last name of Anderson, is calling people and telling them they need to call him ASAP. Once the person calls, they are told there is a warrant issued for their arrest, and that they need to pay a certain amount of money to clear it up.
That payment is often requested by gift card, by Western Union, or other means that are difficult to track or reimburse. There are also reports from other municipalities of the scammers being so advanced, that when asked to call back from a “dispatch” number, they manipulate caller ID to make it appear that the calll is actually originating from a known police number.
PBSO says do not call the person back, but do call the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office at 561-688-3400 if you receive the call. And, says PBSO, officers never call to ask for money.
