DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Delray Beach man allegedly flew across Atlantic Avenue in a Jeep — leading cops on a seven block pursuit until he ultimately stopped. Now, Max Kaufman of Boca Raton is facing a DUI charge.

Police say it all started around 1:40 in the morning on Thursday. A Delray Beach Police officer says he watched as a white Jeep SUV sped on Atlantic. The vehicle had no tag light.

“I was able to catch up with the vehicle and paced the SUV at 49 MPH in a 35 MPH zone,” wrote the arresting officer. “I initiated a traffic stop in the 700 block of West Atlantic Avenue.”

The police report, obtained by BocaNewsNow.com, makes these allegations: “I met with Maxwell Kaufman (sole occupant in the vehicle). I asked Kaufman for his license, registration, and insurance, while notifying him for the reason of stop. He only provided his Driver’s License and Insurance. Upon returning to my vehicle and running the information through NCIC/FCIC, I noticed that the vehicle was registered to a Louise Kaufman and the registration expired on 10/28/2022. I returned to the vehicle and notified Kaufman of my findings. I asked Kaufman where he was coming from, and he advised Hampton Social. During my interaction with Kaufman, I noticed the following: the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emanating from his breathe as he talked, talkative, and glossy eyes. I asked Kaufman to step out of the vehicle. Once out of the vehicle, I notified him of what I smelled coming off him. He spontaneously uttered that he had one glass of wine.”

Kaufman agreed to take part in field sobriety tests which police say indicated he was unfit to drive. He later provided a breath or blood alcohol sample which allegedly yielded results of .144 and .137. The legal limit in Florida is .08. Kaufman was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on a count of driving under the influence. Kaufman, 30, lives in the 5200 block of Congress Avenue in Boca Raton.
