BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A chase following an alleged carjacking in Hallandale led to a fatal crash in North Broward County late Friday night. The Broward Sheriff’s Office provided BocaNewsNow.com with the following details:

The preliminary investigation revealed that shortly after 11p.m., Friday night, Jamari Peacock was driving a 2016 Dodge Charger sedan while being pursued by the Hallandale Beach Police Department in reference to an armed carjacking which just occurred in their jurisdiction.

The Dodge Charger was traveling northbound on I-95. The vehicle proceeded to exit at West Copans Road and was preparing to make a left turn to go westbound, on a steady red light. Meanwhile, Patricia Schmelz was driving a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling eastbound in the center lane of West Copans Road approaching the offramp for I-95 northbound.

According to investigators, the Hyundai proceeded through the steady green light and through the intersection. After running the red light, the Dodge Charger proceeded into the path of the Hyundai, causing the Hyundai to collide with the driver’s side of the Dodge Charge in a T-bone style collision. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene.

Detectives say there were 6 occupants in the Dodge Charger, which were all detained by both BSO deputies and Hallandale Beach police officers. Schmelz was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

The Hallandale Beach Police Department will be filing any and all criminal charges to Peacock and any occupants therein. Investigators say excessive speed along with fleeing and eluding law enforcement are considered to be contributing factors to the crash. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
