BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Get ready for major changes coming to the I-95 entrances for both northbound and southbound traffic in Boca Raton. Metering officially goes into effect on Tuesday. It may cause major delays and backups.
The Florida Department of Transportation — in a video that looks like it was produced by a third grade elementary school class — says the metering will make it easier to merge onto I-95 and provide more control when there are crashes on the interstate. Motorists will be met by a yellow warning light as they approach the on-ramp, then will see a red or green light, advising whether it’s okay to enter I-95 or if the driver must wait. These lights are as legitimate as traffic lights. Police can issue tickets if a motorist disregard the light.
While the “smart metering system” is in place in several municipalities around the nation, it is a relatively new concept in South Florida, where drivers tend to do whatever they want to do, whenever they choose to do it.
The metering system will not be activated 24/7, but instead will be monitored by a Florida Department of Transportation Control Center which can turn it on or off as needed. It is expected to be “on” for most morning and afternoon commutes. Among the goals: reduce traffic backing up onto Glades Road for traffic heading both north and southbound.
Let us know what you think about the new metering system. Leave your comments, below.
At least they’re controlled by FDOT and not the County, otherwise you would be getting more red lights with nobody coming for thirty-plus seconds.
Start writing tickets and check for drivers license and insurance.
This situation is completely out of control, the Palm Beach Booking Blotter on a daily basis has at least 15 arrests every single day of the year for no license, suspended licence,no insurance,no tag ,leaving the scene,DUI, drugs …the list goes on and these are the people caught.
Just think how many are not …
The more enforcement the better it is desperately needed.
Had this system years ago on the long island expressway and other long island highways and it was a complete failure. They turned it off. It doesn’t do anything for traffic. Now this on top of the interchange on Glades which doesn’t work. I totally bypass Glades now and drive through the side streets to get to where I’m going.
I live on Long Island and it is used EVERY MORNING and AFTERNOON. Doesn’t seem to do much
The entire diverging diamond project at this intersection has been a failure. Traffic is every bit as bad heading eastbound in the morning and afternoon.
Having a light to enter 95 is an accident waiting to happen as there will be numerous rear end crashes when motorists stop at the light.
FDOT is clueless!
timing of the testing is interesting as season is winding down.. stats will be compared to in season traffic patterns for a guaranteed positive outcome.
Another major Fubar by those ” traffic specialists” who sit behind desks and have no idea what a solution is. Get a panel ( like jury duty pay) of retired cops/motorists/ and a traffic specialist to figure it out. The solution would be faster and better. The best ideas come from those who deal with it every day.
I agree with you. Every time I go thru this diamond configuration it actually hurts my eyes and my brain. Such a mess. There will be a ton of rear end collisions before even reaching the highway.
I hate Glades Road and will use Palmetto as often as I can. The lights have bad timing and having a light before you enter on 1-95 will cause bumper crashes. I use the turnpike whenever I can.
Nothing but a money grab.
Get ready for lots of rear end accidents.
A stop light slows traffic and will create backups on Glades road. The entrance lane gives one plenty of time and distance to enter I95 without stopping.
They have had a similar system to this in California for over 30 years.
For all the people that are complaining don’t understand that when you slow down the people coming onto the highway it causes less problems merging onto the highway, well, I just feel sorry for you. The overall low IQ or just plain. I want to complain about everything people that spend most of their time putting things on blogs.
If I’m perfectly honest there are times where I get slowed down at the diamond interchange. Also there are times when I go through all four lights and synchronization without having to stop and it works perfectly.
What does that mean to the average person with deductive reasoning?……. Oh yeah it probably is working.
Please people stop complaining so much and if it’s really that much of a problem do like some of you are saying and just avoid Glades all together…. Cuz guess what???. It was a mess before they did it and they’re trying to make it better.
The facts are the facts. We live in the nicest city in South Florida. In a state that everybody wants to move to because of the rest of the country is fubar.
Stop your whining!
Sounds like you should go back to California and take the rest of the liberals with you.
Remove executive toll lanes ( like Miami they be $20 eventually) every merge point causes backups
This was done on ramps in long Island. It doesn’t work. They stopped doing it
