The Florida Department of Transportation’s new metering program is in effect, and you can be ticketed if you ignore the signal.
A staple of life in New York, Minnesota, and many other places nationwide, “metering” is supposed to calm traffic during rush hours. In theory, the red and green lights tell motorists when they can enter the highway. Controlled by a smart traffic control system — and overseen by humans in an operations center — the metering lights will let one car enter I-95 at a time, then hold traffic until it’s safe for the next car to enter.
The system has been in development for years in South Florida. It follows the controversial “Diverging Diamond” that opened at the Glades Road and I-95 intersection last year. While many considered it to be dangerous — and still consider it to be confusing — the Diverging Diamond has shown some signs of success in mitigating traffic issues in that area.

The Diversion Diamond is an excellent idea. I use it often. Unfortunately the westbound for the I-95 southbound lane backs up and is slow. Also, drivers are hesitant to pick a lane. It’s simple, you are either going to I-95 to left or right (specifically identified I-95 lanes hundreds of feet before) or straight ahead. Straight on Glades are 3 lanes to choose from. Just pick one and go, don’t hesitate, don’t stop, just GO. Seems most cars take the left of 3 lanes leaving the right of 3 lanes clear to travel past everyone. What the hey, FL drivers are slow to adjust. Some drivers should never be on the highway, they are never sure of themselves or don’t know where they are going in the first place. You all know them..
When they tried the metering at Palmetto Park Rd, going north, it was a disaster! It backed up traffic onto Palmetto and almost caused numerous accidents. Have they ever heard the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”?
We are moving backwards that will not work in Glades and did NOT worked in Palmetto Pk rd.
It’s a horrible idea. Traffic lights on a merging lane is unnecessary and confusing. It’ll cause hesitation. Especially for tourists who visit the area and have never seen this before.
