BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Two train incidents over the past day have left two people dead in North Broward County. While we are awaiting official word from investigators, BocaNewsNow.com has learned the following from sources connected to law enforcement.

The first incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the area of NW 13th Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A pedestrian was first believed to have sustained injuries after being struck by a train, but first responders determined the pedestrian was killed in the incident. A crime scene was established and train traffic was stopped.

UPDATE: BSO issued this statement around 3:30 p.m. Friday:

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating the death of a man struck by a Tri-Rail train Thursday night in Pompano Beach.

Just before 11 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a crash involving a Tri-Rail train and a pedestrian in the area of Northwest 13th Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Pompano Beach. Broward Sheriff’s Office Pompano Beach District deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded.

The preliminary investigation revealed the man was walking from east to west and stepped on the tracks in front of the train. Witnesses said as soon as the pedestrian got on the tracks he turned towards the oncoming train and was struck by it. Emergency personnel pronounced the man deceased on scene. BSO’s crime scene and homicide detectives responded to investigate.

The pedestrian’s body was transported to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office for a post-mortem examination. No foul play is suspected at this time. The investigation continues.

A second incident occurred around 10 a.m. Friday when body parts were found on the CSX tracks in the area of Atlantic Blvd. and the railroad. First responders in this case determined immediately that it is a death case. BocaNewsNow.com is still awaiting official details, but we believe that a train was not present at the time the body parts were found. It was not immediately clear if the find is related to another case or if an engineer had no idea that person had been struck.

Death by train continues to be a major problem in South Florida, with law enforcement repeatedly reminding pedestrians and motorists to abide by warnings, lights, and gates when trains approach. Still, many motorists run gates in South Florida, and others use trains as a method of suicide. Check back for updates.
