COCONUT CREEK, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — An elderly resident of Coconut Creek is the victim of the latest “Social Security” scam, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department which wants everyone in the area to know about the latest effort to steal your money.

According to police, a woman in her 90s received a phone call, telling her that her iCloud payment failed, that there was a warrant out for her arrest after her social security number was compromised. The only way to solve the problem: buy gift cards and give the numbers to the person on the phone.

While we’re unclear how exactly a failed iCloud payment, a social security number breach, and an arrest warrant come together, anything is presumably believable if said the right way. And police say this was said the right way. The woman believed it, went out, bought gift cards, and gave the numbers to the perps.

We don’t know how much money the woman lost, but it’s enough that police are reminding everyone of this very simple yet serious message: “Any time you’re asked to buy gift cards to supposedly fix some type of problem, it’s always a scam.”

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is constantly warning about scams involving gift cards, bitcoin, a Western Union payments. Quite simply: police will never, ever ask you for payment by gift cards, bitcoin, or Western Union. If you believe you’re the victim of a scam, call the police.

  1. Just don’t answer the phone. If it is someone you know, or important, then they will leave message. Otherwise don’t answer the phone. They will get the message and not call again. On the computer, you have to be extra careful. Don’t click on the hyperlink. You don’t respond to these crazy emails. I really feel empathy for this elderly woman. It could be your mom. I hope she didn’t lose much money.
