BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — It’s a big win for private school American Heritage Thursday and a big question mark for all of the public and other private schools that closed in the region so kids could look outside and say, “wow. it’s cloudy.” American Heritage, considered one of the leading private schools in the nation, announced late Wednesday that it wasn’t going to lose a day of education for a storm far away. The school — with campuses in Delray Beach and Plantation — went virtual for students in grades 4 through 12. The decision was easy to execute. The school requires all students to have iPads.

But for St. Andrew’s, Pine Crest, and all public schools in Palm Beach County and Broward County, the story was different. There were no classes on Thursday, which left many parents taking to social media and contacting BocaNewsNow.com to ask why these school leaders didn’t do a better job predicting what weather conditions would truly be like in South Florida. To be fair: school busses are not supposed to operate in winds greater than 35 MPH and had the storm jogged to the east a bit faster, the situation here could have been much different. The region remains under a tropical storm warning.

Despite the decisions made for Thursday, all schools in the region are expected to reopen on Friday. Broward Schools confirmed the decision just after 2 p.m. The Palm Beach County School District announced Wednesday that Thursday would be the only day off. FAU is also set to reopen on Friday.

Hurricane Helene is still expected to hit north Florida as a Category 3 or Category 4 storm late tonight or early Friday. South Florida may still feel tropical conditions.
