DEERFIELD BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — One person is dead and an investigation is underway following a fatal crash in Deerfield Beach on Thursday. The Broward Sheriff’s Office provided this narrative to BocaNewsNow.com which explains what investigators believe happened:
“The preliminary investigation revealed that Wanida Meloya Garcon (20, of Deerfield Beach), was driving a white Toyota Sequoia traveling westbound on Southeast 15th Street which is a two-lane roadway. The north side of the roadway, to include the westbound lanes, are in the City of Deerfield Beach. The southside of the roadway, to include the eastbound lanes, are in the City of Pompano Beach.
According to investigators, the Toyota approached a slower vehicle and drove around it by entering into the eastbound lane then swerving back into the westbound lane, just prior to a small, raised center median separating the two lanes.
Detectives say, as Garcon was completing this maneuver, she lost control of the vehicle. The Toyota struck the outside westbound raised curb, veered across the center median, struck a residential fence along the southside of the roadway. The vehicle continued west where it impacted a stop sign and rolled until coming to a final rest within the southwest corner of the intersection in the 1700 block of Northeast 54th Street on the Pompano Beach side of the roadway.
Investigators say, Garcon was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger, Shanel Samson (age and address temporarily withheld), was partially ejected. Good Samaritans stopped, to render aid, and several of them lifted the vehicle to free Samson.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported the driver and passenger to a local hospital for treatment. Samson was later pronounced deceased.”
