Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, true to its name, rescued a resident on the top floor of the building. PBCFR provided this narrative:
”At approximately 8:40 Wednesday evening, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the 1500 block of Lucerne Avenue for a reported high-rise structure fire. Initial 911 calls stated that there was a smoke detector alarm on the 10th floor. We also received word from the alarm company that there was a water flow activation from the sprinkler system. It was reported that someone may still be in the affected apartment on the 10th floor.
Units arrived to find residents evacuating the building. PBSO Deputies and PBCFR personnel assisted many residents in evacuating through the stairwells. A second alarm was struck due to the size of the building. It is an 11 story apartment complex.
Firefighters immediately took the stairwell to the 10th floor, where they found smoky conditions in the hallway. They entered the affected apartment and rescued one person, bringing them down the stairwell to safety. They were then able to isolate the fire to the room of origin. The fire was under control within three minutes. Powerful fans were used to help clear the hallways of the smoke. The fire was declared out at 9:41. At 9:45 residents were allowed to start returning to their units.
The 10th floor will have limited access due to water and smoke damage. The Red Cross was been contacted for housing assistance. One person was transported to a local hospital. PBCFR fire investigators are on scene. The cause is still under investigation.”
