The shutdown of Heathrow Airport in London is affecting travelers worldwide.

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The complete shutdown Friday of London’s Heathrow Airport is affecting thousands of flights worldwide and several from South Florida. The shutdown comes just as families planning to travel Friday for spring break trips to the U.K. are finding out their flights have been canceled.

American, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic all fly non-stop from Miami International. Those flights are canceled. Many other airlines, including Delta, United, and JetBlue fly from Fort Lauderdale through other airports. This shutdown is affecting inbound and outbound flights. It is also causing major problems for airplane positioning. Shutting down a major airport means thousands of airplanes are not where they’re expected to be, causing problems for other flights on other routes.

The airport shut down Friday following what’s being called a transformer fire that cut power to the entire airport. All operations at London Heathrow are expected to be canceled for all of Friday.
