BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A strong smell of gas in several locations around the City of Boca Raton is keeping Boca Raton Fire Rescue busy Tuesday morning. The cause is unclear as of 10:40 a.m., but officials are working with Florida Public Utilities to figure out what’s happening and why.

Hazmat crews have been called to investigate the smell in the following locations: 3601 North Military Trail; 450 NE 20th Street; 5829 North Federal Highway; 501 East Camino Real; 2266 West Maya Palm Drive; and 1401 NW 9th Avenue. There may be additional locations that are still being processed by Boca Raton’s dispatch center. We are unaware of evacuations at this point, but the smell of gas is always taken seriously by emergency officials.

It’s unknown if Florida Public Utilities changed the pressure in its system or is increasing the smell — Mercapatan — that is added to ensure that people can actually smell a leak. If you are smelling gas, please call 911 and evacuate your home or building until you are given other instructions by fire officials or police.

UPDATE at 11:06 a.m. — It appears that the gas company over pressurized the system which is causing the smell and potentially other problems. Check back for updates.

UPDATE at 12:10 p.m. — Boca Fire Rescue issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com: FPU was doing some work on the system. As a result of the work being done, some of the systems were overpressurized Causing the relief valves to open. These relief valves do not remain open, but they will cause a temporary smell or odor of gas. Boca Raton Fire Dept.  is responding out to these calls ans needed  and FPU is aware of the issue and currently trying rectify the problem. There have been no injuries or medical issues at this time only a need to ventilate the areas most affected with the odor.
