DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The “pride intersection” at NE 2nd Avenue and NE 1st Street in Delray Beach is not going anywhere — at least for now. The City of Delray Beach agreed during a City Commission meeting to fight a State of Florida directive to remove the rainbow colored “pavement markings.”

With no one opposing the plan to fight the State of Florida, resident after resident spoke in support of the intersection. The only negative comments were against what is believed to be what some are calling the homophobic Florida Governor Ron DeSantis whose Department of Transportation is threatening municipalities in the state.

“Delray Beach and other Florida municipalities are being extorted,” said retired Judge Rand Hoch, President of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC). “You have been told that unless queer art is removed at your expense, this administration will withhold millions of dollars in transportation funds needed to repair our aging infrastructure.”

The directive orders local governments to remove pride markings.

“If the pavement makings are not removed by September 3, 2025, the Florida Department of Transportation will remove them by any appropriate method necessary without further notice,” wrote Department of Transportation District Secretary Steven C. Braum. “You are further notified that if the markings are removed by the Department, all costs associated with the removal will be assessed against the City of Delray Beach. You may avoid these costs by removing the pavement markings and then notify the Department of compliance immediately.”

The Delray Beach City Attorney will argue at an administrative hearing in Orlando on September 2nd why he believes the state does not have the authority to order local governments to do anything with local roads.

    1. This artwork is deeply cherished and holds significant meaning to many people. It’s not just
a colorful piece of art, it’s also a powerful tourist attraction, drawing numerous visitors to the
area. Its presence enhances the overall appeal of the Pride Intersection on 2nd Avenue and a boon to the restaurants and small shops alike!
Myself, I never leave that area without an amazing lunch or a new purse. I say leave it!!!

  1. I don’t care who a person decides to love but with all the cyclists, scooters, extra lanes, traffic, road signage, road rage, speeding drivers, don’t motorists, pedestrians have enough stimuli to process in navigating S. FL streets as it is? Roadways are for driving…hopefully safely. Put signage on sidewalk or elsewhere so streets are safe to drive without extra distractions. Safe driving, everyone!

    1. If colored stripes on a street hinder your ability to maintain control on a roadway, it’s time for the grandkids to take away your keys. The Brightline has killed 182 people and injured 74 and nobody is calling for it to be done away with. Not a single person has lost control of their vehicle because they were distracted by a crosswalk.

  2. I’m sorry but this has no business being on streets any more than any other special interest group. I don’t care if it’s straight pride, religious symbols, or this. It’s not necessary and picks one particular viewpoint over another. Why can’t government be neutral on these issues?

And before anyone jumps on me: No, I don’t think the government should sponsor any murals or other things outside of what is necessary for the functioning of the infrastructure.

  3. This governor is a pretty pathetic person. Those colors look good on the street and do no harm whatsoever. Seems like these maga folks just have to stick their noses everywhere. Enough already. This mural isn’t hurting anyone and looks pretty good actually.
Governor, there are more important problems in this state to focus on. Do us all a favor, and get the hell out of Delray!!!

  4. The state just [illegally] painted over the intersection outside of the Pulse nightclub (scene of 2016 massacre) overnight. The state government is despicable and shameful. This should be a warning to Delray to increase police patrols (or a have an officer park there 24×7) of this rainbow intersection. If any state workers show up to paint, arrest them and hold them for maximum allowed, until transferring to WPB lockup (or if the workers aren’t Caucasian or African American, and without any trace of accent, hand them over to ICE for a trip to Alligator Alcatraz for a few weeks). Tow and impound their vehicles (call the most expensive company in Naples, to rack up the fees). If the state sends a bill for the [illegal] repaint, multiply it by 10 and sue (double it every 30 days if it isn’t settled/resolved).
