BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — If you speed through a school zone in the City of Boca Raton, the odds are now very good that you’re going to get cited. The new School Zone Safety Program, which officially takes effect today, Oct. 16, aims to curb speeding and make school zones safer for children, parents, and staff. Powered by the RedSpeed camera system, the initiative automatically tracks vehicles exceeding the speed limit in active school zones.

The city’s warning period, which began on Sept. 2, is done. That means drivers caught speeding in school zones where cameras are installed will start receiving citations instead of warnings. So far, more than 1,300 warnings have already been issued — with over half coming from the area around J. C. Mitchell Elementary School.

Citations will be issued during school arrival and dismissal times when the flashing school zone lights are active. Drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 10 mph will face a $100 fine. Officials emphasize that these citations are civil infractions, meaning they won’t add points to a license or affect insurance rates.

Phase one of the program includes school zones at Addison Mizner K-8, Boca Raton Community High, and J. C. Mitchell Elementary. Later this school year, enforcement cameras will also be added at Blue Lake Elementary, Calusa Elementary, Omni Middle, and Spanish River Community High.
