The Weisman Delray Community Center was evacuated Thursday for a feared hazmat situation that ultimately turned out to be a cooking issue. Everyone is safe.

UPDATE: 11:14 a.m. — ALL CLEAR. After calling for a “regional hazmat response” which leads to highly trained hazardous materials firefighters from across Palm Beach County responding to the scene, it’s been determined that a cooking issue led to an odor. There is no threat or problem at the Weisman Delray Community Center. The more than 200 senior citizens who were quickly evacuated are now slowly and calmly being returned to the center. Someone apparently “overcooked” food, according to sources familiar with the emergency response.

DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Weisman Delray Community Center at 7019 West Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach is being evacuated as of 11 a.m. due to a reported hazmat situation. At least 200 senior citizens are being rushed out of the building.

According to initial information received by BocaNewsNow.com, a gas leak was feared in the area, but it seems that the building itself is not served by gas lines. Fire officials are now trying to determine where the gas leak — if there actually is a gas leak — is originating. The initial hazardous materials response was initiated by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Expect significant traffic issues in the area for the foreseeable future. The center is near the intersection Atlantic and Michelangelo Boulevard — right by the PBSO District 4 substation. This is just west of Jog Road.
