UPDATE at 4:30 p.m. — BSO just issued an address correction. “Please note that the location of the initial incident is the 700 block of Deer Creek Emerald Way West, not the 700 block of Deer Creek Lakeside Way.”
UPDATE at 2:05 p.m — A second person is confirmed dead. Here is the update from BSO: “According to Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives, the body of a second male has been recovered from the waterway. The individual has been pronounced deceased. The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.”
UPDATE at 10:19: The Broward Sheriff’s Office just issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com: “Just before 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a burglary in the 700 block of Deer Creek Lakeside Way in Deerfield Beach. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene. The preliminary investigation revealed that multiple individuals were burglarizing unoccupied vehicles in the community. After deputies arrived, at some point, the driver of the suspect vehicle fled the area and crashed into a lake near Lakeside Way and Lakeside Drive.
An adult male in the suspect vehicle made it out of the car and onto land. He was taken into custody. One of the first responding deputies entered the water in an attempt to rescue others from the suspect vehicle but was unable to do so. BSO’s Dive Team, Aviation, K-9 and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue also responded to search for other individuals who were in the suspect vehicle when it went into the water.
At this time, one additional male individual has been recovered from the water and was pronounced deceased on scene. First responders continue to search the water for another individual believed to have been in the suspect vehicle. Detectives with BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units responded to investigate the circumstances of the incident. The investigation is active and ongoing.”

BocaNewsNow.com has learned that a car with multiple occupants entered the water in the area of Lakeside Drive and Lakeside Way shortly after 4 a.m.
Police, divers, and emergency rescuers immediately launched a rescue operation. One person who was in the vehicle was taken into custody, but the fate of other people in the vehicle remains unclear. Sources tell BocaNewsNow.com that it is likely there are multiple fatalities.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office issued this statement just after 6 a.m:
“An active Broward Sheriff’s Office investigation is underway in the area of Lakeside Way and Lakeside Drive in Deerfield Beach. There is no threat to the community.”
