The Fire Marshal’s NO-BURNING RECOMMENDATION is erring on the side of caution. At this point in time, this is NOT an official ban. However, it’s highly recommended that residents refrain from burning anything outdoors. This includes the use of fire pits.
The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) measures how much water the soil loses relative to how much it absorbs. The KBDI is 635 today; anything above 600 puts fire officials on alert. The current weather patterns, including lower temperatures, dry vegetation, and winds, are three major factors that increase the risk of dangerous brush fires starting and spreading.
The recent frosts exacerbate the situation since they do not hydrate the grass. The small ice crystals actually kill vegetation, making it more susceptible to burning.
