BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Boca Stage is back, bringing a dose of Brooklyn dysfunction to the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park. The company debuted “Damaged Furniture” Friday night. It’s an award-winning dark comedy by Howard Skora that runs through March 15. The play picked up several awards and nominations during its initial 2018 run in Los Angeles.
The story centers on Doug Elling, a man forced to trade the West Coast for his old Bensonhurst neighborhood after his uncle dies in a truly bizarre accident. Doug quickly finds himself trapped in the wreckage of his family’s struggling furniture business, surrounded by a cast of characters that define “dysfunctional.” Between his alcoholic father, a mother who masks everything with a smile, and a sister who happens to be a therapist, Doug has to navigate a minefield of family expectations while trying to keep his own future on track.
Director Keith Garsson is excited that the production marks a homecoming. Boca Stage originally started at the Willow Theatre over two decades ago as the Boca Raton Theater Guild, and Garsson says returning to the venue allows the company to refocus on its original mission of producing curated, ”a la carte” shows. He notes that moving away from a traditional full-season commitment gives the team more freedom to select fresh, relevant works that speak to a modern audience.
Garsson describes the semi-autobiographical play as a “straight and twisted” comedy that reflects our modern habit of saying exactly what we’re thinking without a filter. To bring this Bensonhurst chaos to life, Garsson has assembled a veteran local cast including Bruno Faria as Doug, alongside Valerie diLorenzo, Sharon Pfieffer, Liz DeBeer, Shane Tanner, and Susan Lloyd.
