BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Broward-based Spirit Airlines ceased all operations early Saturday morning. A notice published to its website said that all flights had been cancelled and passengers should NOT go to the airport.

“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”

If you have a ticket on Spirit that you purchased with a credit card, immediately initiate a dispute with your credit card company. If you paid with cash or a check, you may be out of luck. There is NO customer service available. The airline is NOT responsible for getting you anywhere. Other airlines are not required to honor Spirit tickets. The Spirit Airlines website does offer a “refund” portal, but rules and processing times are unclear.

American Airlines early Saturday said it is offering “rescue fares” for a few days to help stranded passengers, and may increase capacity by using larger planes on some routes. Officials at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport said they are mobilizing customer service reps early Saturday to help stranded passengers.
