Time Capsule Reveal Delray Beach

DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A time capsule buried in Delray Beach 50 years ago, during the nation’s Bicentennial, will be cracked open this Fourth of July as the country marks its 250th birthday.

The City of Delray Beach will open the historic capsule at 5 p.m. on July 4 at Atlantic Avenue and A1A, weaving the moment into its annual Independence Day celebration. Officials say the capsule offers a one-of-a-kind look back at the Delray Beach of 1976 — the memories, messages, and artifacts a previous generation chose to leave behind for today’s residents to rediscover.

“This moment allows us to reflect on where we’ve been as a city, honor those who came before us, and celebrate how Delray Beach has grown alongside our nation,” Mayor Tom Carney said in announcing the event. “Opening the time capsule on America’s 250th birthday makes this event especially meaningful.”

The ceremony will include a brief historical reflection, the opening itself, a reading of select contents, and remarks honoring the city’s past, present, and future. Some of the items pulled from the capsule may later go on public display at the Delray Beach Historical Society.
