Palm Beach County says there’s a correct way to destroy an American flag. The solid waste department will help.

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — If you are looking for the correct way to destroy an American flag, the Palm Beach County Solid Waste Department wants you to know that it’s ready to help. The agency has set up special drop boxes at seven Home Chemical & Recycling Centers across the county, giving residents a dignified way to dispose of tattered or worn U.S. flags instead of tossing them in the trash.

The U.S. Flag Code calls for flags that can no longer serve as a fitting symbol of the country to be retired with respect, and the SWA’s program is designed to do that. In a statement, Palm Beach County says each color on the flag carries meaning — red for strength and valor, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance, perseverance and justice — and officials say those symbols deserve a proper send-off when the fabric finally wears out.

Drop-off locations stretch from north county to south county. They include the North County Transfer Station in Jupiter, the West Palm Beach HCRC on Jog Road, the Glades Regional facility in Belle Glade, the West Central center in Royal Palm Beach, the Central County site in Lantana, and two Delray Beach locations — one on State Road 7 and another on SW 4th Avenue. Most sites are open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with varying Saturday hours.

Flags can be dropped off alongside other household hazardous waste items accepted at the centers. A full list of what’s accepted is available on the SWA’s website, along with hours and directions for each location.
