BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A charter bus driver who left a loaded handgun behind in a bathroom at St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton is now in custody, according to information obtained by BocaNewsNow.com. Gregory Augusto Castellanos, 49, of Sanford, is accused of violating Florida’s law against possessing a firearm on school property.
The story is two years in the making. Castellanos used the bathroom in the security office at the school’s main entrance on May 8, 2024, and accidentally left his satchel behind. Inside was a black Smith & Wesson 2.0 .40-caliber handgun with a round in the chamber, two fully loaded seven-round magazines, his Florida driver’s license, and other personal items — 15 rounds of ammunition in all. The St. Andrew’s Security Director alerted police on May 9 after the bag was discovered.

School officials told Boca Raton Police that surveillance video confirms what happened. The bus carrying Castellanos arrived on campus at 5:23 p.m., and he is seen entering the gatehouse to use the bathroom three minutes later. He left the bathroom at 5:42 p.m. without the bag. A lacrosse coach later called a security guard, who searched the bathroom around 7:54 p.m. and found the satchel sitting on the sink counter. The handgun and ammunition were turned over to police as evidence.
The investigating Boca Raton Police Officer assigned to the case ran a background check on Castellanos and learned he had no prior convictions that would have barred him from holding a concealed weapons permit, and that he was legally allowed to carry the firearm — just not on school grounds. A warrant was issued for his arrest in June of 2024. PBSO executed that warrant on Thursday — more than two years later. It’s unclear how PBSO came into contact with Castellanos who lives near Orlando. Castellanos is being held on a misdemeanor charge Friday morning in the Palm Beach County Jail.
