DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is rolling out a lineup of hands-on Japanese culture workshops this August, giving South Florida families and hobbyists a chance to try their hand at paper folding, pottery, and drumming. The Delray Beach museum’s monthly programming continues to lean into immersive experiences, pairing traditional crafts with expert instruction for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
Kids can get started August 1 with a Youth Origami Workshop, running from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for $20. Origami, the centuries-old Japanese art of paper folding, will have young participants creating their own original pieces under guidance from museum instructors. It is a quick, affordable entry point for families looking to introduce children to Japanese art traditions.
For adults ready for a bigger commitment, Morikami is hosting a two-day Kurinuki Ceramic Workshop on August 8 and 22, priced at $150. Kurinuki is a traditional hand-building technique that starts with a solid block of clay and involves hollowing it out to form a vessel. Participants will spend day one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and day two from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. learning the technique while crafting a chawan, a Japanese tea bowl, from start to finish.
Rounding out the month is a Taiko drumming class for adults, meeting Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. beginning August 18 and continuing August 25 and September 1, 8 and 15. The course costs $135, or $130 for Morikami members, and covers the history and culture behind taiko along with hands-on instruction — drums and sticks are provided.
