BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Boca Raton Town Center Mall is not on fire late Sunday afternoon, but there is a huge Boca Raton Fire Rescue presence. Turns out someone smelled smoke, and they weren’t entirely wrong.
BocaNewsNow.com has learned that an air conditioner that feeds PacSun in the mall was having some sort of problem — possibly related to freon maintenance. An employee in the store feared that something was on fire and called 911. That led to a massive response as the City of Boca Raton takes no chances when a huge building with lots of people may be on fire.
First responders were on the scene within minutes and quickly identified the problem — or at least what the problem wasn’t. There was no smoke. There were no flames. But the smell of something was evident.
Within minutes, Boca Raton Fire Rescue professionals identified the air conditioner as the source and noted that a technician was apparently in the area — possibly working on the unit before the problem started. While several people were evacuated from PacSun, there was no widespread mall evacuation. No one was injured. The situation is resolving itself as of 4 p.m. Sunday.
