City officials are reminding residents that Florida law already bans parking, stopping or standing a vehicle on a sidewalk — including the stretch where a sidewalk cuts across a driveway. A car blocking even a few feet of pavement forces pedestrians into the street to get around it, and that’s especially dangerous for kids, seniors and anyone with mobility issues. Clear sidewalks also matter for ADA compliance, letting people with disabilities move around town without hitting obstacles.
The city will spend August 31 through September 30 warning people about the rule before real enforcement kicks in. Starting October 1, any vehicle caught blocking a sidewalk will draw a $250 fine, billed to the vehicle’s owner. Delray Beach Police Chief Darrell Hunter framed it as more than a parking issue. “Keeping our sidewalks clear is about more than parking compliance,” Hunter said. “It’s about making sure everyone in our community can travel safely and independently.”
Residents should double check that their vehicles sit entirely within driveways or other legal parking spots, with no part hanging over the sidewalk. The city is asking people to pass the word to neighbors, family and visitors so the message reaches everyone before the fines begin.
