Through Sept. 14, officers logged 14 incidents downtown in 2026, compared with 32 during the same stretch in 2025. That’s a drop of about 56%.
“We want people to feel confident enjoying everything Downtown Delray Beach has to offer,” said Delray Beach Police Chief Darrell Hunter. “Our department has taken a proactive approach to preventing these crimes, and our focus is not only on responding when incidents occur, but also on creating an environment where residents and visitors can enjoy our downtown safely and with a peace of mind.”
Police point to increased patrols, proactive enforcement and technology used to identify suspects. Fifteen arrests have been made in downtown pickpocketing cases. The department is also working with downtown businesses on prevention, and some bars have added security measures like scanning patrons’ IDs at the door, which can give investigators valuable information when something happens. With the entertainment district drawing big crowds year-round, police say a visible presence and close cooperation with local businesses remain key parts of the strategy.
Police are also urging residents and visitors to take a few simple precautions in crowded areas. Keep wallets, purses and cellphones secure and within sight, and don’t leave valuables unattended on tables, counters or chairs.
