Broward Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony is halting all budget negotiations with Broward as an investigation continues.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Broward Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony Monday announced that he has ceased all budget negotiations with Broward County as the Office of the Statewide Prosecutor investigates a potential move by the Broward County Commission to have BSO stop patrolling Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades. The commission is also considering splitting BSO and Broward Fire Rescue — the two have been united for nearly two decades. Here is the statement issued by Tony:

>>The Broward Sheriff’s Office has a duty to protect the people of Broward County, support the effective operation of county government, and safeguard the integrity of its work. As the Florida Office of Statewide Prosecution proceeds with an investigation of members of the Broward County Commission and county government, it would not be prudent for me or members of my staff to engage in discretionary budget negotiations with the Commission while that investigation remains active.

As the Statewide Prosecutor’s case continues, I will not comment on or discuss investigative details. The Statewide Prosecutor must be able to conduct this work, and every person is entitled to due process.

This decision is to protect the people of Broward County from unnecessary disruption, uncertainty, or questions about whether budget discussions could be influenced by the investigation. It is not a judgment about the investigation’s outcome.

BSO will continue to meet its legal responsibilities in the budget process, provide information required by law, and protect the delivery of essential public-safety services throughout Broward County. Any required budget matters should proceed through formal, transparent channels so that county services, employees, and residents are not adversely affected.

The people of Broward County deserve stable government, responsible stewardship of public resources, fairness, and accountability. No public office is above scrutiny, and no one should use public resources or official negotiations to shield anyone from legitimate examination. BSO will respect the investigative process, continue serving Broward County’s communities, and work to ensure that county government remains focused on the safety, security, and well-being of its residents.
