POMPANO BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — For nearly six years, the Social Security checks kept landing in a dead woman’s bank account. Federal prosecutors say her great-niece kept taking the money out, and a jury has now convicted her.
Asha Anderson, 48, of Pompano Beach, was found guilty of theft of government funds and Social Security fraud after a six-day federal trial in the Southern District of Florida, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday. Prosecutors say she took more than $152,000 in retirement benefits she had no right to.
The great-aunt’s benefits had been paid by direct deposit. When she died, the Social Security Administration didn’t know, so the monthly payments kept coming. Between April 2017 and December 2022, Anderson repeatedly accessed the account and made hundreds of cash withdrawals, mostly from ATMs in Pompano Beach and Coconut Creek, according to court records and evidence presented at trial.
Anderson faces up to 10 years in federal prison for theft of government funds and up to five years for Social Security fraud. A federal judge will determine her sentence. The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General investigated the case, which is filed under case number 25-cr-60312.
