BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — If you’re dumb enough to run a scam, maybe set aside a little intelligence so you don’t scam a cop. PBSO says that’s the lesson two men apparently never learned — at least until now.
Levi Cantarero and Shawn Hamilton, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, posed as bank employees on October 27 and tried to talk a PBSO detective into pulling thousands of dollars out of his checking account.
The detective apparently thought it was too good to be true — crime literally called, so he answered. Instead of hanging up, the detective kept talking, and fellow detectives joined in to turn the call into an investigation.
The suspects told the detective to hire an Uber driver to carry what they believed was his money to Broward County and leave the package beneath a parked vehicle. When Cantarero and Hamilton showed up to grab it, PBSO detectives and agents, with help from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, moved in and took both men into custody.
PBSO says scams like this happen far too often, and not every victim is this fortunate. Police remind you to never share personal or banking information with an unverified caller. Be cautious of anyone pressuring you to withdraw or transfer money. And when something doesn’t feel right, stop, verify and report it.
We remind readers that charges filed by law enforcement agencies are allegations and that all criminal defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We also remind readers that civil court filings are allegations made by the party filing suit. The validity of those allegations will be determined in court.
