BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — If you don’t need to be out today, don’t be out today. That’s the warning from the National Weather Service and local emergency managers as more rain is heading to South Florida. While Palm Beach County did better than much of the region, rain totals for the 48 hours leading into 3 a.m. Thursday are still notable. Parts of Boca Raton received 7.65 inches of rain. Boca West logged 7.28 inches. Delray Beach logged 5.23 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

In Hallandale, nearly 20 inches of rain fell over 48 hours, with Hollywood just behind at 19.10. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport logged 12.84 inches. North Miami recorded 20.43 inches. Rescue workers across the region spent much of the night and early morning hours rescuing stranded motorists.

I-95, which was closed in Broward County for several hours due to flooding on Wednesday, is open again as of 5 a.m. Thursday. However, many side streets — especially in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, and Miramar remain impassable. Flights at all of the region’s airports are experiencing major delays and often cancellations. Already 100 flights have been cancelled at Miami International and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International as of early Thursday morning.

All schools and camps that are run by the Broward County School District are closed Thursday. No word yet about Friday. All Palm Beach County School District summer programs ARE operational on Thursday as of 5 a.m., but check with your individual program before heading out. More rain is expected throughout the day Thursday. Check back for updates.

Brightline has stopped all service south of Fort Lauderdale until further notice. Fort Lauderdale is the last stop for now. There is northbound service from Miami or Aventura. Tri-Rail is operational but passengers are encouraged to check the Tri-Rail website or app before heading to the train.
