BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Gunshots in the area of Florida Atlantic University on Saturday should not be cause for alarm, according to a media advisory issued by the school mid-Friday afternoon.

The funeral for Boca Raton Officer Lauren Kresse is set for 11 a.m. It is private and not being run by the Boca Raton Police Department. Officer Kresse, just 44, lost her battle with cancer earlier this month. FAU issued this advisory:

“A private memorial service for a Boca Raton Police Department officer will take place on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m., in Florida Atlantic University’s Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium, Student Union, Boca Raton campus. The memorial will be held with police honors at noon, which includes a three-rifle volley to conclude the service.

The university has advised the campus community that gunshots will likely be heard during the volley. Parking may also be impacted in the lots adjacent to the Student Union.”

As we reported on January 19th, the Boca Raton Police Department issued this statement:

“With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our sister and dear friend, Officer Lauren Kresse. At 44 years young, her valiant fight against cancer ended yesterday afternoon surrounded by her family. Lauren was a 20-year veteran of the Boca Raton Police Department. She was a beloved instructor in the Boca Raton Police Training Unit, making sure all our officers had the training and equipment necessary to do their job safely. Lauren was also a long-serving member of the Boca Raton Police Honor Guard.

Lauren’s bright and bold personality positively influenced everyone she interacted with. She was fiercely loyal to the people and things she loved, and her unwavering passion for law enforcement was evident throughout her career.

We will miss Lauren every day around the department, but find comfort knowing we have a warrior guardian angel looking out for us. Please keep Lauren’s family in your thoughts.”

The funeral is a private event. The public is not invited.
