DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Work on the intersection of Lyons Road and Atlantic Avenue — an intersection under construction for nearly two years — is still expected to be complete in July. It’s welcome news for the thousands of motorists every day trying to left onto Lyons Road from Atlantic, only to find the two lane turn has been reduced to one lane.

“The Palm Beach County Engineering & Public Works Department was asked to share updates about the Lyons Road project to widen from 2- to 4-lanes between the LWDD L-38 Canal and Atlantic Avenue. Here is an update on the completed work as of last week for Lyons Road as well as the upcoming work.

April 2024 – Work included median configuration north of Atlantic Avenue, compacted area for future turn lanes, grading for new curbing and installation of the new curbing.

5/1/24 – Contractor continued placing, compacting, and finishing base rock for the proposed left turn lane in the median of southbound Lyons to eastbound Atlantic Avenue. Testing company was onsite to perform soil density testing on base rock.

5/2/24 – Contractor continued placing, compacting, and finishing base rock on the southeast quadrant of Lyons and Atlantic. Again, the testing company was onsite to perform soil density testing on base rock.

5/3/24 – The base rock passed testing and the contractor was able to seal the base rock in preparation for the upcoming asphalt paving operation.

In the upcoming weeks, the contractor will begin paving through the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road. This work will require switches in the traffic pattern and drivers will be alerted as this progresses. Work is still on track to be completed in July 2024.”

  1. The coolest part was when they spent all the time/money/headache installing new, rigid beam traffic lights at that intersection a few months back, only to remove them after about a week and put back the old ones!

  2. The Engineering Department is a joke. More flashing red arrows, smart signalization, and mast arms? Nope! Replacing the traffic signals at Palmetto Park and Powerline/Jog Road with the same third-world concrete pole and wires, taking three-plus years to complete a simple bridge over the El Rio Canal, and this? Yes!
