POMPANO BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A pedestrian is dead after a BMW veered off South Federal Highway and slammed into a covered bus bench Tuesday afternoon, and Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are trying to piece together exactly how it happened.
We first told you about the crash on Tuesday as police remained on the scene. Detectives now tell BocaNewsNow.com that the crash unfolded in stages. Shortly before 1 p.m., Jo Anne Llera, 47, of Pompano Beach, was driving a 2024 BMW M240i south on South Federal Highway when she rear-ended a 2017 Honda Accord in the 500 block. Instead of stopping, Llera steered around the Honda and kept driving south. When she reached the 900 block, the BMW drifted off the road into the swale on the west side of the highway and crashed into a covered Broward County bus bench. A pedestrian was there at the time — detectives haven’t determined whether he was sitting on the bench or standing nearby — and he was struck and killed.
The BMW didn’t stop there. After hitting the bench, it plowed into two light poles, a tree and several parked, unoccupied vehicles on the lot of a nearby auto dealership. Deputies pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene; his identity is being withheld. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics took Llera to Broward Health North with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Flying debris from the crash also struck a 2010 Lincoln Town Car that was heading south on South Federal Highway, and nine unoccupied vehicles on the dealership lot were damaged. BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit investigation remains active and ongoing.
