BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — While things have largely — but not completely — gotten better in Publix across Florida, so you can finally shop for food without having to see self-absorbed people who use the supermarket as a dog bathroom, the story isn’t the same at Joseph’s Market, Costco, and bizarrely Home Goods in Boca Raton.

Josephs_Boca_Raton
Before shopping in Joseph’s Market at Town Center Mall, know this dog may have been sniffing or licking your stuff.

Among the scores of images we received over the past week from South Palm Beach County shoppers tired of seeing dogs where they don’t belong are the images in this article. You’ll note a dog in Costco for apparently on reason at all — Costco, of course, sells food which makes it a crime to have the dog in the store. Same is true at Joseph’s at Boca Raton Town Center Mall.

And then there’s the inexplicable need of “Popcorn Woman” who placed her hairy pooch in a shopping cart where people place pillows and other, well HomeGoods that now need to be cleaned before they are used. Nothing says “hypoallergenic pillow” like a “hypoallergenic pillow” covered in dog hair.

Costco Dog Boca Raton
In Costco Boca Raton, you can buy things that may have been sniffed or licked by a dog. Yay!

Of all of the people nominated this week, we bestow the Boca Rudeton honors his week to Popcorn Dog Lady. Ma’am, we are giving you a doubled-discounted-blue-light-special coupon redeemable for nothing other than an invisible manual on where it’s appropriate to put your dog. We hope you enjoy it.

We remind our readers that there is no expectation of privacy in a public place. Don’t want to be seen here? Don’t be rude here! Send us your submissions using the “Animal In Stores” button at the top of this page. Have thoughts about these animal people? Share them below. There is another concern in addition to the impoerant issues about sanitation arising from the presence of dogs in stores. Many people are afraid of animals. I witnessed a woman who hubg back from a deli counter, afraid to approach whil a man and his dog were there. I know about this because she was visibly upset and I asked her if she needed help. People have a right to shop in peace and comfort. Pet owners do not have a right to bring their pets along.

I think most of the dogs in Boca are kept cleaner than some of the people shopping in Publix. However, people should walk around in stores with their dog in a stroller. Some people don’t know how to control their dog in public places. This annoying because a dog shouldn’t be controlling their owner.

Dogs do not belong in food establishments and really anywhere where there are great numbers of people. Do you understand that there are people who are allergic to dogs and have asthma, and take medication, and get shots. When they come in contact with dogs it could send them to the hospital. Dogs have a place, they are animals, not humans, there is a time and place, and food establishments are not the place. Yes, you love your pets, (I get that) but your pets shouldn’t infringe upon the rights and safety of other shoppers. Dogs shed whether you bathe them or not. 7. Tony Marcs Avatar

Honestly, what is your problem? What didn’t you understand about it being unsanitary and against our laws? You might not understand, but there are many reasons why there are laws to keep dogs out of places that sell or serve food.
Dogs can carry bacteria and germs that contaminate food and make people sick. This is especially true in places where food is prepared or served, such as restaurants and grocery stores.
Some people have allergies to dogs, and their presence can make it difficult for them to breathe or eat.
Some people are afraid of dogs, and their presence can make them feel uncomfortable or even unsafe.
Dogs can be disruptive, especially in places where people are trying to eat or relax. They may bark, jump up on people, or run around.
Sometimes, businesses may allow service animals, such as guide dogs for people with disabilities, into their establishments. However, even service animals must be well-behaved and under control at all times.
Though the laws regarding dogs in places that sell or serve food vary from state to state, in some states, it is illegal to bring any dog into a restaurant or grocery store, even if it is a service animal. In other states, businesses may allow service animals, but they may have restrictions on different types of dogs. Florida does not permit non-service dogs in places that sell or serve food. You and people like you place hundreds of others in danger because you only care about yourselves. That is the problem.

If you are unsure about the laws in your area, it is always best to err on the side of caution and leave your dog at home when you go to eat or shop.

For your information and after some research, it is not illegal to take a picture of someone in public in the United States. This is because the First Amendment protects the right to freedom of expression, which includes the right to take photographs.
There are some exceptions to this rule.
If someone has a reasonable expectation of privacy, it may be illegal to take their picture without their permission. For example, it is illegal to take photos of people in bathrooms, changing rooms, or other private areas.
If someone takes a picture of you with the intent to harass or intimidate you, then this may be considered a crime.
If you take a picture of someone and use it for commercial purposes without their permission, this may violate their right to publicity.
In most cases, however, it is perfectly legal to take a picture of someone in public. This is especially true if the person is in a place where they can be seen from a public vantage point, such as a sidewalk, park, mall, etc.

My first question, is this HomeGoods sell open food? If they don’t the dog is allowed just as it would be allowed in Home Depot or Lowe’s or any other place that does not sell open food by law now is for grocery stores and places that do absolutely non-service animals should not be allowed and honestly it looks like Publix is cracking down some. I have a service dog and actually had an employee other than a manager challenged me the other day, the manager know me well as I’ve shopped there for years with my service Animal and nobody questions she is properly badged and behaved and of a breed that can be a service animal and perform the task for what she is assigned 99% of dogs cannot be service animals they cannot perform And their behavior is obvious

    1. Mark Avatar

You are incorrect. HomeGoods is permitted by the Florida Department of Agriculture Food Safety Division to sell packaged food. The same FDA regulations apply. And that includes restriction of most animals.

To those people who discuss the world stage politics as a way to deter the claim that dogs don’t belong in stores; you are carrying on with a non- sequitur argument. The idea of bringing a dog in a store has nothing to do with politics and is invalid as a counter argument.
There is no need for dogs in a store and no argument that having one is necessary outside of service dogs. Period. End.

WHY does everyone FREAK OUT over a dog being in a shop?? Most of these pets are treated so well they rival royalty! They are generally spotlessly clean! I’ve NEVER heard of someone getting sick from a dog being on the floor while his owner picks something up, or eats. In today’s world you CAN’T leave your dog outside because of the inhumane sick people out there, who will steal your baby and do God knows what with your “child!!” Please learn some tolerance in this world!! I have to deal with your filthy, dirty kids picking their noses and wiping it on the cart or sitting on an airplane and finding baby’s stinky puke on my seat, etc. We ALL have to learn to TOLERATE each other and put a smile on your face!!

    2. Tony Marcs Avatar
      Tony Marcs

Wow, You are frustrated with people who strongly react to dogs in stores. While most dogs are well-behaved and clean, it’s not unlikely that someone would get sick from being near a dog.
There are a few reasons why some people may feel uncomfortable with dogs in stores.
Some people have allergies to dogs, and even being near a dog can cause them to experience symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and watery eyes. Others fear dogs because of a past negative experience or a general fear of animals. Additionally, some cultures or religions believe dogs should not be in certain places, such as food preparation areas. We must respect these different perspectives, even if you don’t personally understand them. If you see someone uncomfortable with a dog in a store, it’s best to give them some space. And it’s not a bad idea to snap a photo and send it to the Boca News.
As for your concern about children being messy, I understand you. While it’s important to teach children good hygiene habits and closely supervise them in public places, we should also remember that they are still learning. Mistakes are bound to happen, so it’s best to be patient and understanding.
In my opinion, it’s essential to be tolerant of others, even if they have different perspectives than us. With a little effort, we can all learn to live together peacefully. Try not to break our laws, as it is against our laws to bring a dog into a place that sells or serves food. It’s not my kaws. It’s our laws. It is a better way to live in harmony.

While I think the amount of people who think it’s acceptable to bring their dogs everywhere is ridiculous, HomeGoods in particular is known to be a pet-friendly store. The parent company allows pets in stores (of course individual stores are able to create their own rules). Dogs in grocery stores is ridiculous. But dogs in HomeGoods which is likely pet-friendly is a different story and I recommend you double-check that before you keep this post up any longer.

Find something else to write about, something that actually helps our area….like where and how can we plant more trees to help lower the temperature in Florida instead of tearing them down and replacing with cement.

      1. Yes!!!! I think this is the dumbest thing that boca news now does. This is the least rude thing about boca and these people should not be put on here. It’s embarrassing when they aren’t doing anything wrong. If the place they are at has a problem with the dogs being there then let them deal with it. Stop this. It’s ridiculous

    1. Agree with you Donna. I think that the articles and picture hype are rude! Before shopping in Joseph’s Market at Town Center Mall, know this dog may have been sniffing or licking your stuff. Did you follow the dog and owner around and see it licking an item? Dog in cart is no different than a child shoes walking in the cart.
Strongly suggest that author not go to Europe where dogs are welcomed in a lot of stores and restaurants

      1. Europe is also filled with terrible cigarette smoke everywhere you go. Keep the articles coming Boca news! We love putting these tule breakers on the spot. It’s obvious that the people who are mad, are the rule breakers haha

      1. Harley, just because there’s more important issues going on in the world doesn’t mean we ignore the little ones. and some people consider dogs in supermarkets by food some people are scared of dogs and these are important issues people need to follow their laws. stop minimizing the laws

  3. So what guess the woman with the adorable 4?lb ball of fluff I saw being put ON the counter top where people pick up beverages in starbucks at Clint Moore and military trail gets left off. I figured if the starbucks employee didn’t say anything, I’m not getting in the middle- but for gods sake lady , put the dog on the floor- he’s not a fluff display for sale!!

    1. Yes and you are part of the problem we can all see. Is there something you can not understand about “It is unsanitary and illegal to bring a non-service ddig in a place that sells or serves food? It is SO simple.

  4. I understand about dogs in supermarkets but this is ridiculous and if people want to take their dogs shopping for home goods I think dog haters should back off.
Boca News now is a great resource for our community but this rudetown dog hate is annoying

  5. Isn’t it illegal to take someone’s photo with out them knowing? I can’t stand that you are calling people rude for bringing their dog out. Let the businesses decide if they have a problem. Please
    Stop this boca news now.

    1. Yes and you are part of the problem we can all see. Is there something you can not understand about “It is unsanitary and illegal to bring a non-service ddig in a place that sells or serves food? It is SO simple.

    1. You are incorrect. HomeGoods is permitted by the Florida Department of Agriculture Food Safety Division to sell packaged food. The same FDA regulations apply. And that includes restriction of most animals.

Period. End.

    1. Aileen, it’s sad that you never had the joy to experience having a child so now you had to settle for a dog. Remember you were once a puking child and soon enough you will be in diapers again. I guarantee you’re picking your nose while you read this

  8. Palm Beach County had a plethora of actual serious problems, and this is what you choose to write about so frequently!? Why?

The vast majority of the time those little spoiled imps some call children are far more disgusting/disruptive than dogs ever are.

  9. Thank you Boca News for listing Rudeton and pictures of people taking their dogs into stores where they do not belong. It is a relief that many people are now leaving their dogs at home after you started this column. I am tired of still seeing dogs led around stores as they lick the bottom shelves or sitting in the cart. Store managers must enforce the health code and speak up to these rude dog owners.

  10. When are you going to talk about the terrible, dangerous, selfish drivers who put us at far greater risk than dogs? I have never felt at risk driving anywhere else in America as I do in South FL.
Speed limits and lights are ignored, signaling is rare while zigging and zagging without a signal is normal and there is zero police oversight or enforcement.

    1. Well, those bringing their “fur babies” into stores always stike me as the folks driving below forty on Palmetto Park Road, and probably incorrectly pronounce the “Raton” in Boca Raton as rhyming with baton.

      1. Yes, indeed. They have an entitled mentality, yet they are terrified of everything around them. They seem to think their little pooch in a stroller will keep them safe from harm. They glorify these dogs and then they trash innocent children. They are so disrespectful, especially towards those who have true service dogs. What has this world become?! I’m sure they’re the same people who put on their car hazard lights when it’s raining, and who refuse to make a right turn when there’s a red light. This is FL, not NY!

  11. It’s probably only a matter of time before AI and facial recognition can identify these dog-people photos by name. Now that would make this a real fun column.
    Imagine the fireworks!

  12. Not all service dogs wear the vest. Be careful about your assumptions. I have seen a friend whose photo was posted on Rudeton twice with complaints about his dog. The dog however is a trained and registered service dog for a medical condition and has saved his life multiple times. Im not a lawyer, but it seems like bocanewsnow should be careful with these postings.
